Mid-winter is an ideal time to observe our evergreen trees. This hike will showcase many of Ottawa’s conifers with focus on the regionally significant population of Red Spruce (Picea rubens) in Ottawa’s eastern Greenbelt, and associated flora. Due to the lack of a dedicated trail system and anticipated snow cover, this event will require endurance and some hiking dexterity on the part of attendees. Snowshoes are recommended. This is a snow or shine event.
Make sure you dress warmly, in layers! Given the forecast, sneakers and skinny jeans won’t cut it. Winter boots, warm socks, long underwear or snowpants, a warm coat that is wind-resistant, good gloves or mittens, and a scarf and/or balaclava are recommended. Make sure you have limited exposed skin.
Just a note to those interested in this tour tomorrow. The weather is will be cold (approximately -20C) with windchills close to -30C. I will still be giving the tour, but I encourage anyone interested in attending to dress warmly, given the cold conditions.
