Geology Walkabout – Some Stops on the Ottawa Geoheritage Network

/Geology Walkabout – Some Stops on the Ottawa Geoheritage Network

June 9, 2019 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Leader: Geof Burbidge

Meet: at the first stop of the field trip: W. Erskine Johnston Public School, 50 Varley Drive in Kanata

This field trip introduces participants to some regionally significant bedrock exposures in the Ottawa area which exhibit some fascinating geological features. Geof, a photographer, naturalist and geologist who has been leading popular trips for the Club for over three decades will help interpret for the group the first three stops of one of the Ottawa Geoheritage Group’s “self-guided” tours. The second stop will be at the Walmart at Earl Grey and Kanata Road, the third stop is at P6 at Stoney Swamp. For the sake of protecting the rock outcrops that will be visited on this field trip, thereby protecting Geoheritage in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, participants are asked not to mark or remove even loose pieces from the outcrops. We ask that you observe and preserve your memories through notes and photographs.

Those who wish some brief preparatory material can google “Ottawa Geoheritage” and follow the links to the description of the field trip called “geology of the Ottawa area”.

Bring a magnifying glass or a hand lens and a pen knife (to test representative hand samples from Geof’s personal collection only), a snack or lunch and a drink, and wear sturdy footwear.

This trip will be postponed in the event of the forecast of a steady rain. Check the web site.

Dear Geoff: Why did you not give a few more words of directions so that this morning I would not have missed the school that is on Varley and described as being off of Steacie St. which it is not. THe Google maps etc. are very unhelpful for the last bits of directions. I finally found the school but you people were just leaving at 10:20 I do not know where the other places are and do not have a GPS.. Just a few words of directions would have been nice and prevented me from being disappointed about missing the trip

P.S. The people on the street in Kanata are not much help with directions. Next time please provide specifics about the location parking lot P6 is not so great.. I even left several minutes early to be sure not to be late.

Further it would be helpful if event organizers left their phone numbers so we can contact them for directions as what happened to me to-day.
